Kitchen paint colors with white cabinets allow you to change up a pretty normal and typical architectural detail. The wall colors should still relate to the style of your cabinetry. However, you can go in almost any design direction with this neutral tone in the space. Here are a few tips on how to pick which shade you should go with.
You might want to pay attention to the actual architecture of your cabinet to determine your wall color and the overall color palette. For instance if you have flat front cabinet doors then this feels very modern or very retro. This can call for a lot of bright colors such as red. The wall color is going to make up for the lack of architectural detail on your cupboard doors.
However, if you have a traditional style of cabinets such as a shaker style you can go with a lot of different paint colors. This can be a great piece for a shabby chic inspired kitchen with pale pink walls and lots of floral artwork or rose decoupage ideas. However, you could also take it into more of a nautical design direction with navy blue walls. You may want to bring in an island with a weathered wood look, which will also bring in a gray. This can relate to a lot of stainless accessories, appliances, and door handles.
If you aren’t in love with your cabinetry then try to find a wall color that is going to distract from it without being too daring. For instance, black may initially seem like it will be too heavy as a wall color. However, if you have black appliances that you aren’t thrilled with this will help them to blend in. At the same time you could paint a black and white stripe on your focal wall or go with a rich mosaic glass black tile on your backsplash. Really when you think about it the largest element of your room is going to be cabinetry so you might get away with a more daring wall color than if you were just decorating say a dining room.
You’re pretty lucky to have white cabinets. Kitchens with these options can have all different kinds of themes. It all just depends on your budget as well as the materials that you already have in your room. If you have a lot of stainless steel appliances, high end marble countertops, and subway tile backsplashes then this feels very vintage inspired. Then you’re going to want to let the materials themselves be the star of the show and just stick with a basic white wall color. This works best if you have quality pieces or if you have beautiful leaded glass in the doors. You probably don’t want to distract from this and let the most expensive items in your room be the focal point instead of trying to bring in a more daring wall color.

When choosing paint colours for kitchens it’s important to stay current with the trends especially when painting kitchen cabinets white. For instance a few years ago we were seeing white cabinets going in a very country design direction. We saw a lot of painted wood signs on the walls and watering can accessories. They were paired with deep blue or red wall colors as well. This created a lot of contrast with the cupboards. Now we are seeing more of a vintage farmhouse kind of look. The white cabinets are still in the space and there is a rustic family-friendly feeling in the room as well. However, now we are seeing less contrast too. This can be a lot of greens as well as butter yellow. This is also going to help a small kitchen to feel a little bit larger and it creates more of the country style look.
The other option is to go in more of a modern design direction. Turquoise kitchen accessories are going to help you to accomplish this quite beautifully. In fact we are also seeing this as a very popular trendy wall color. Again, it can seem a little bit stark against the white cabinetry. However, it can be a fun nautical inspired space. You might want to hang up beautiful photos of white sandy beaches that use both of these tones together.
When you do decorate with bold colors you really need to find balance. For instance you could try painting your island or even an antique hutch or dining table in a bright turquoise color. You’ll want to fill up the shelves with a lot of beautiful white ceramic dishes to tie back in with your cabinets. This lends continuity to your pops of color, even though they will still be the focal point of your space.
