If you’re having this built from scratch then you really want to get the most out of your cabinet maker. Ask for a variety of different drawer sizes. Look for dark cherry wood finishes or painted versions. This is going to help you to really mimic a dresser but still get all of the function that you need in your modern day kitchen.

You can really talk to your stone fabricator as well. He might be able to add in a small eat-in bar on the opposite side of your kitchen island. This is especially important if it just faces towards your living room and you don’t have room for a proper eating area. Just include a small counter. There are a variety of bracket types available and depending on the weight of the stone you might even be able to go with a Tuscan inspired wrought iron version. However, you’ll be need to be aware of the flooring that’s in the living room as well. If it’s just carpet with barstools on top this can turn really messy. You can either extend your kitchen flooring out into the rest of the room or just look for an easy to clean area rug.

You can also really find a kitchen island table. This is going to be your least expensive version. It’s also going to be a way that you can add this into a traditional kitchen. In this case really pay attention to the scale of your room. A smaller portable island is usually going to be better if your kitchen isn’t specifically designed for an island and it’s still going to give you plenty of area to work.

If you really look at your existing cabinetry you can get kitchen island ideas. This doesn’t have to be in the same color but as long as it’s in the same basic style these two pieces are going to relate to each other. For instance if you just have a cottage kind of effect then go all out on your kitchen island. In fact you could even just use an oversized stencil in a floral pattern or more of a country kind of check. This is great if you’re piece lacks a lot of ornate details on it which are pretty evocative of both the antique and the farmhouse kitchens kind of styles.

It’s also really important to find pieces that work within your space. If you’re having this built from scratch then you can get a contemporary curved version. This will be one of your most expensive options. You probably even have to have the countertops fabricated especially for you just because of the unusual shape. However it does really create a huge focal point in your room and lends itself well to a custom kitchen.
