Kitchen Designs and Layouts

Kitchen designs and layouts really help you to make the most functional space possible. Usually this will really integrate the idea of a work triangle. This means that your stove, sink, and fridge should all be in the shape of a triangle for the maximum efficiency when you’re actually cooking.

L-shaped kitchens are one of the more popular layouts. This gives you plenty of room to walk around in the center. Basically all of your cabinetry and appliances line up forming an L shape.

However, we are seeing slight adjustments to this. This is going to include the idea of either a peninsula or an island. The peninsula is attached to the rest of your kitchen counters and has three sides free. However, a kitchen island is going to be a floating piece with four sides free. That’s the difference between kitchen islands and peninsulas.

You might want to try a U-shaped kitchen if you want to maximize your storage space. This could also include a pendant light. Instead of an island, this doesn’t take up quite as much floor space. The disadvantage to this is that you’re going to have less of the feeling of an open area and it can be difficult for several cooks to work in at one time. Create the allusion of more space by losing upper cabinets over the peninsula, which was popular in vintage design styles. This will help to open it up to the next room.

Galley Style Kitchens

Galley kitchen styles are usually going to have a bank of cabinets on either side. The problem that you’re going to run into in these spaces is that it’s simply almost always going to feel cramped. While this style was very popular in vintage design it’s really gone out of vogue in more modern spaces. A contemporary kitchens focuses more on open floor plans. A great way to work around this is just to go with a monochromatic color palette. Look for cabinets that are a little bit narrower. Simplify your kitchen space. Not every room has to have an eat in kitchen space. That’s what the dining room is for. There are a few advantages of this such as your guests aren’t always going to see all of the dirty dishes in your sink or hear the dishwasher.

One really important consideration in kitchen design is going to be the height of your cabinets. This might mean that you have to go with custom cabinets which are going to be more expensive. Not only does this give you more storage space in smaller kitchens it visually expands the line and silhouette of your cabinetry. This means that the space is going to seem quite as cramped so it works well for small kitchens.
