Kitchen Island Ideas

Kitchen island ideas allow you to totally change the layout of your room. You’re going to be able to get a lot more storage space and workspace. This gives you a very updated look but you need to make sure that it still works for your existing floor plan.

Typically when you buy a movable island it’s going to just be basic pine. It will probably be a pretty light color and can lack a lot of character. Instead you want to try whitewashing the legs for more of a vintage effect. Of course you want to leave your actual work surface alone and properly prep the area just so that it still is usable. You may also want to spend a little bit more money to find more subtle wheels. Otherwise it just looks like an oversized microwave cart.

If you want antique kitchen islands then you’re probably going to have to repurpose something. In a lot of design magazines we are seeing the idea of a vintage feed counter. This has a lot of glass doors and drawers on them. If you are buying it new even a replicate could be quite expensive. You may want to just talk to your local antique dealer or contractors who do construction and just ask them to keep their eyes out for you.

Small kitchen island ideas are going to use more of a dresser kind of style and you can actually use an antique dresser as long as it’s the right height. However, you are going to have to do a little bit of remodeling to it. You can see these pieces with larger butcher block tops put on top of them. This is just so that you have an overhang so that people can use it as a breakfast counter and there’s a place to put barstools. Otherwise, just all of the drawers are going to make it more difficult to really work there.

You’re also going to have to consider that usually the backs of these pieces are unfinished so you may have to apply molding to them.
